DIY... BIG Concrete Egg for Spring or Easter

Pinned by I Gotta Create

For a long time, I have wanted to make a concrete egg and when I found the BIG plastic egg for 25¢ at a Thrift store, I thought I would give it a try.
This was a new experiment for me. Did not really know what I was doing, so I did not take my camera to photo a tutorial. Sorry. I mixed up a batch of cement mortar mix (Anchoring Cement) and added some craft paint color. Opened the egg and filled each half with my mix. Waited a little while for the mix to cure and then put the two pieces together. Had a little trouble getting it snapped down because it was too full.

I let it cure overnight before opening the egg. Had to rip the egg mold to get it off.

 Hatching out ...
I ended up with a ridge around the middle which I sanded down with course sandpaper; then sanded the complete egg with very fine sandpaper and applied paste wax. Came out really nice and the color was great with just a shadow of marbling. Next time I will stir more color in just before pouring or immediately after I pour it in the mold. This could also be done with the normal two part plastic eggs.

 Flat bottom for sitting.

This was fun and not real time consuming. I think it turned out pretty nice and makes for a nice Spring or Easter display. I will likely have it on display all the time, because I like birds, bird nests and eggs.

So here it is all ready for Easter show off.

The  books are tied with a frayed burlap ribbon and the "nest" is string pulled from burlap.

Happy Spring ... hope you enjoy this little craft.

Blessings,
Audrey Z.
